Pompeii Entrances, Map, and Orientation: Which Gate Should You Use?

Founder & Italian Travel Curator
Pompeii has three entrances: Porta Marina (main gate, opposite the train station, best for first-timers), Piazza Anfiteatro (quieter east side, best if staying in Pompei town or arriving by car), and Piazza Esedra (smallest, least crowded, 2 minutes from Porta Marina). All three have ticket offices and services. Download the official map before your visit β the site covers 45 hectares with no reliable signage inside.

The three Pompeii entrances and what each one offers
β Which is the best entrance for Pompeii?
Porta Marina for most first-time visitors arriving by train from Naples or Sorrento, because it is directly opposite the station and leads to the Forum in 5β10 minutes. Piazza Anfiteatro is better if arriving by car or staying in modern Pompei town. Piazza Esedra is best for avoiding crowds and for visitors with reduced mobility.
Pompeii has three official entrances with ticket offices: Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra, and Piazza Anfiteatro. Porta Marina is the main west-side gate directly opposite Pompei Scavi β Villa dei Misteri station, Piazza Esedra is a smaller west-side gate just a short walk from Porta Marina, and Piazza Anfiteatro is the east-side gate next to the amphitheatre and modern Pompei town.
Porta Marina β best for train arrivals and first-time visits
Piazza Anfiteatro β quieter, good if staying in Pompei town
Piazza Esedra β smallest and often least crowded
Porta Marina: the main entrance from the train station
Porta Marina is Pompeiiβs main west-side entrance, directly opposite Pompei Scavi β Villa dei Misteri Circumvesuviana station and a few steps from the largest car and coach parks, so it is the default gate for most visitors arriving from Naples or Sorrento.
By train from Naples or Sorrento, you take the Circumvesuviana line to βPompei Scavi β Villa dei Misteriβ, exit the station, and walk about 1β2 minutes across the road following the brown βScavi di Pompei β Porta Marinaβ signs to reach the ticket office and turnstiles.
Inside, this entrance gives the quickest access to the Forum, Basilica, and Temple of Jupiter areaβaround 5β10 minutes on footβso most classic itineraries start here.
From a practical point of view, Porta Marina concentrates most services: main ticket offices, information desk, security checks, restrooms, and meeting points for guided tours and audio-guide pick-up.
The main drawback of Porta Marina is that it concentrates the highest volume of visitors, especially between 9:30 and 11:00 AM when day-trip buses from Naples and cruise ships arrive. If you enter here, aim for 9:00 AM opening or after 13:00 to avoid the worst queues. Security screening is mandatory at all entrances and can add 10β15 minutes during peak hours.
Piazza Anfiteatro: the quieter eastern entrance
Piazza Anfiteatro is Pompeiiβs eastern entrance, located right beside the Roman amphitheatre and the Large Palaestra. It is the most convenient gate if you are already in modern Pompei town or arriving via Pompei Santuario station.
From here, you enter directly into the amphitheatre area and then walk roughly 10β15 minutes through the ancient streets to reach the Forum.
This entrance has its own ticket office, restrooms, ATM, bookshop, and bag deposit. It is also the closest entrance if you are arriving by car, as several paid parking lots are concentrated on the east side of modern Pompei. The Garden of the Fugitives, with its plaster casts of eruption victims, is just a few minutes' walk from this gate, making it a powerful first impression before you even reach the main streets.
Piazza Esedra: the smallest and least crowded gate
Piazza Esedra, also called Porta Marina Inferiore, is a smaller west-side entrance located a short walk downhill from Porta Marina and Pompei Scavi station.
It offers similar access to the Forum area but typically with fewer crowds, as many visitors instinctively choose Porta Marina.
Piazza Esedra is the recommended entrance for visiting the Antiquarium, Pompeii's on-site museum, and it has an elevator connecting to the accessible "Pompeii for All" route. It also has a bookshop and audio guide rental. Despite being just 2β3 minutes' walk from Porta Marina, it sees significantly less foot traffic because most visitors follow the signs to the larger gate without realising this alternative exists.
Which entrance is best for your itinerary
If you are arriving by Circumvesuviana train from Naples or Sorrento, Porta Marina is usually the best option because it sits directly opposite Pompei Scavi station and leads quickly to the Forum and main monuments.
If you are staying in modern Pompei town or arriving from the east side, Piazza Anfiteatro is more convenient and gives you a quieter start near the amphitheatre.
If you want to stay on the station side but avoid the heaviest crowds, Piazza Esedra is often the smartest choice.
Pompeii site map and how to orient yourself inside
Before you go, download the official A3 Pompeii map and mini-guide from the Archaeological Parkβs website. The map clearly marks entrances, services, and suggested visitor paths.
Path 1 (blue triangles) focuses on the amphitheatre side and suggests exiting at Piazza Esedra.
Path 2 (blue squares) crosses the Forum and exits at Porta Marina.
Path 3 (blue circles) includes additional houses in Regio VI.
β Do you need a map for Pompeii?
Yes, the site covers 45 hectares with minimal signage inside. Download the official A3 map from pompeiisites.org before your visit β it marks three colour-coded paths, all entrances, services, and the "Casa del Giorno" schedule for specially opened houses.
Choosing a path in advance helps you plan a logical route and avoid backtracking inside the 45-hectare site.
Inside the site, orientation is straightforward once you understand the grid. Pompeii's streets run roughly east-west and north-south, with the Forum in the western third as the central landmark. If you ever feel lost, head toward higher ground or follow any major street west β you will reach the Forum or Porta Marina area within 10β15 minutes.
